A comprehensive programme of study focused on developing knowledge and understanding required for the Institute of Brewing and Distilling General Certificate in Brewing examinations.

The programme provides underpinning scientific knowledge and instruction in the theory and practice of the brewing process with direct contact to tutors and on line support for your learning. The programme can include an optional one day introduction session to orientate the study programme with a five day tutorial and revision programme also available to consolidate learning and assess understanding.

Teaching methods include workbooks, on line support materials, tutorials and workshops. Regular on line tests and example questions provide feedback to plot your development and highlight areas of focus. Tutor mentoring allows you to access expert support and advice and provides personal guidance.

Who is eligible for this course?

This course is suitable for those with experience of the brewing process typically from employment in the industry or for those looking to gain internationally recognised qualifications to enter the industry.

An understanding of basic scientific concepts is desirable to facilitate understanding of the material. This would be typically provided by a school or university study please contact us for guidance. Achievement of the Brewlab Certificate or Diploma qualification is a good guide to a suitable background.

Enrollments are staged throughout the year and placed into small groups for discussion and tutorials. The programme of study lines up with IBD examination dates, allowing students to immediatley apply their newly aquired knowledge.

Past students from a variety of breweries have succeeded with their Institute of Brewing Certificate examinations with tuition from Brewlab.

Objectives

  • Develop a fundamental knowledge and understanding of brewing science and technology.
  • Develop an understanding of the processes involved in the ingredients of beer, in wort and beer production, in yeast and fermentation management and in processing.
  • Develop an understanding of the management of brewing and packaging and how hygiene is achieved through the application of cleaning and quality systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to judge the quality of beers through laboratory analysis.
