What inspired you to do the Brewlab course?

My family and I come from Bradford, West Yorkshire. Three years ago we decided to move to Paphos, Cyprus. As a family we have always had an interest in beer and as Cyprus did not have a microbrewery brewing real ales we thought it would be a perfect business venture. We found the Brewlab course online and decided it would be a good idea for myself to come back to the UK and study brewing in Sunderland.

What areas of the Brewlab course were most beneficial to you?

I found all areas of the course extremely helpful, although the most beneficial was the practical side and also going to visit other breweries in the north of England. Even to this day the tutors are in contact with me if I have any questions that need answering regarding any brews I am doing.

Where do you work now?

I work in our family run brewery, Aphrodite’s Rock Brewing Company along side Chris Richards who I met on the Brewlab course. As I had not brewed on a large 20 l kit before we thought it would be a good idea to have a more experienced brewer by my side. So we contacted Chris after he had gone back to the United States who was more than willing to relocate to get our brewery up and running..

What is your position?

How much beer do you produce?

We currently have a 20hl brew house and 4 40hl fermentation vessels. This allows us to do a back to back brews twice a week so we are able to fill our FV’s. We have the facility to bottle our beers, as well as kegs and flexi casks for bar, restaurant and home sales.

What plans do you have for the future?

We would eventually like to open a visitor centre at our brewery where we can invite the public and holiday makers in Cyprus to come and have a look around the brewery and taste some of our beers. We will also have a merchandise shop where people can buy our beers and ARBC memorabilia.

Do you have a recipe you are most proud of?

My personal favourite beer we brew is our Golden ale we call Stratford Gold, we call this a “session beer” in Cyprus which is a golden straw colour ale topped off with a thick creamy head. The blend of English Maris Otter and crystal malts is well balanced by a blend of citrus aroma hops and traditional English bittering hops. Stratford Gold appeals to all as it delivers refreshment and a clean crisp flavour which goes down well in the Cyprus heat.
